Energy's New Heart, Girl
Today, Energy 92.7 has added two new songs to their playlist. Now receiving regular rotation are D.H.T.'s "Listen to Your Heart" and Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl." The original version of "Listen to Your Heart" was the first of multiple number ones for Roxette on my own personal chart nearly 16 years ago. I'm not a huge fan of the remake, but it's not a bad add for Energy; it had been the highest ranking song on Billboard's Dance Radio Airplay chart that Energy had not yet begun spinning. "Hollaback Girl" is quickly becoming a national phenomenon - it has a very good chance of topping Billboard's Hot 100 on the chart released tomorrow (and is almost guaranteed to hit the top next week). While this song gives the station a little bit of urban flava' (about as much flava' as Gwen can muster up), it feels somewhat out of place when compared to the rest of their dance adds this year. Still, any new blood is generally good blood, and perhaps Energy listeners will glom onto this like the rest of the country has.
Unfortunately, the song that is sacrificed to accomodate these new adds is Jonathan Peters' "All This Time," which has now languished in the bottom portion of Energy's playlist for three months. This killer track spent several weeks at #1 on Billboard's Dance Radio Airplay chart and achieved heavy rotation status at nearly every other dance station in the country. Why it apparently failed to catch on with Energy listeners, I'll never understand.
