Caesars Jerk, Cunetta Shines
This morning, Energy has added "Jerk It Out" by the Caesars (presumably the Richard J. Dalton remix). This song is just starting to make it big on the national scene and gained popularity via its use in iPod television commercials.
And in another wise move, Energy is now spinning "Come Rain, Come Shine" in regular rotation. Newcomer Jenn Cunetta is creating quite a buzz on the dance scene, and this upbeat track has the potential to make a decent dent on Billboard's Dance Radio Airplay chart.
Unfortunately, the powers-that-be at Energy still seem to believe in an eye for an eye, in that every time they add a new song, they feel they have to take one away. This week, the two victims appear to be Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl" and Mario's "Let Me Love You." I feel that "Rich Girl" has run its course and won't miss it all that much - Energy should be adding Gwen's new song, "Hollaback Girl," soon anyway. But yanking Mario after just four weeks on the air is a ridiculous move. The DJ X mix of "Let Me Love You" was definitely one of the hottest tracks heard on Energy, and it will be sorely missed.
As long as Energy insists on staying 50% gold (meaning half of their airtime is devoted to songs that are more than a couple of years old), they will remain a mediocre dance station at best. Their current formula of playing one newer hit followed by one older hit has become entirely too predictable. On top of that, they seem to stick to the same 100 or so golden oldies, when there are thousands more out there. These songs were good in their day, and at first it was fun to hear them on the radio again. But now, after six months of banging them as many as ten times a week, it's time to start changing the station.
